Re-Authorization of the Endangered Species Act

Objective
The dazzling variety of plants and animals found in the U.S. not only provide Americans with natural beauty and regional identity, but also play a vital role in sustaining such industries as tourism and seafood. The Endangered Species Act (ESA), which is up for re-authorization in 2006, is the best tool we have for protecting our nation's biodiversity, but a core group of legislators and administration officials have vowed to remove all protections for critical habitat, exempt the federal regulation of pesticides from the law's checks and balances, and institute a scheme that would allow land developers to name their price for lost profits if they comply with endangered species protections.
