Powering the Dragon: China and the Global Energy Challenge

Our Earth Day (April 22) EcoSalon, "Powering the Dragon: China and the Global Energy Challenge," featured Thomas Friedman, author and New York Times foreign affairs columnist; Barbara Finamore, director of NRDC's China program; and Rob Watson, director of NRDC's Green Building and International programs. As Barbara and Mr. Friedman discussed, the United States has every reason - from protecting our national security to capitalizing on competitive opportunities in the market for innovative technologies - to address our oil dependence with clean energy solutions. And as Rob described, such solutions exist now , particularly in the area of green building design. In California, passing AB 32, the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006, and an oil-extraction fee initiative that will be on this November's ballot, would position the state as the leader on global warming and clean energy, not just for the rest of the U.S., but also for China, which has already begun modeling its energy efficiency goals and methods after California's successful efforts.
