in Our Environment: The Threat to Public Health
The E2 Northern California chapter held an EcoSalon on February 4 in Atherton titled: "Who Will Watch the Watchdog?" Toxic Threats to Public Health and the Role of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Our speakers were Eric Schaeffer, Director of EPA's Office of Regulatory Enforcement from 1997-2002, and Linda Greer, Director of NRDC's Public Health Program. Eric addressed the recent changes at EPA that have hamstrung the agency's enforcement capacity, and illustrated the enormous complexity of opposing forces involved in producing effective environmental regulations. Linda focused specifically on pollutants in air, water, food and shelter that pose the greatest risks to human health, and the work that NRDC is doing to reduce our exposure to these chemicals.
