Presidential authority includes numerous tools, including executive orders and regulatory action that can produce meaningful results and strong market signals for clean energy investment - without Congressional action. The President is using all of these tools to affect national policy and government performance, including investments in advanced transportation and grid modernization, appliance efficiency standards from DOE, power plant emissions regulations from EPA, building efficiency standards for all government facilities, and a broad slate of clean energy initiatives at the DOD. All of these actions are in service to the President’s goals that include reducing energy waste by 50% and doubling renewable energy production by 2020. Please join us for the rare opportunity to hear directly from the President’s Federal Environmental Executive, Jon Powers, who oversees these initiatives from the White House. E2 has worked extensively with Jon in his current role and when he led clean energy initiatives for the Army. He will give an overview of the President’s strategy to advance the clean energy technologies of the 21st century, and discuss opportunities for E2 members to engage. If you have questions, please contact Erik Chen at erik@e2.org or 415-875-6100. Putting a Price on Carbon and Balancing the Budget (San Francisco, CA) EcoSalonWednesday, March 28, 2012 (5:30 PM - 8:00 PM Pacific)The United States is running deficits in excess of one trillion dollars a year and is projected to continue to do so. There are only a few ways to generate revenues or savings at all comparable to this debt. Pricing carbon is one way to internalize the economic and societal cost of climate change as well as be a revenue source with enormous economic benefits - if the revenues are spent wisely. It is on the basis of its economic benefits that a carbon tax is currently under serious discussion in Washington, DC among economists and others who influence national policy. But is putting a price on carbon politically possible in the 113th Congress? Join E2 and Resources for the Future to hear from Bob Epstein, E2 Co-Founder; Phil Sharp, ten-term former Congressman from Indiana, President of Resources for the Future, Chairman of the Energy Foundation, and member of the National Academies’ Committee on America’s Climate Choices; Ray Kopp, Director of the Center for Climate and Electricity Policy at Resources for the Future; and Kristin Eberhard, Legal Director of Western Energy and Climate Projects for the Natural Resources Defense Council about public attitudes on pricing carbon, an assessment of the political landscape going into the elections, and an overview of the economic and policy considerations of a carbon tax. Special Event at the Commonwealth Club: Pebble Mine: Toxic Gold and Global Impact (San Francisco, CA) SpecialEventThursday, November 10, 2011 (6:00 PM - 8:00 PM Pacific)The proposed Pebble Mine would be one of the largest gold and copper mines in the world, located at the headwaters of the Bristol Bay watershed in southwest Alaska. Proposed by a consortium of international mining giants, the mine would include an open pit 2,000 feet deep and two miles wide and an underground mine 5,000 feet deep. Opponents argue that it would generate an estimated 10 billion tons of waste, laced with toxic contaminants, stored in perpetuity behind giant earthen dams taller than the Three Gorges Dam in China - all within an active earthquake zone. Some 50 leading jewelry companies have taken the "No Pebble Pledge," committing not to source minerals from the mine. They join Alaskan natives, commercial and recreational fishermen, conservationists, sportsmen, and local and regional businesses in an unprecedented coalition opposed to the mine. Moderated by Wendy Schmidt of the Schmidt Family Foundation, a panel of opponents including Michael Kowalski, Chairman and CEO, Tiffany & Co.; Joel Reynolds, Senior Attorney, Natural Resources Defense Council; and Kimberly Williams, Executive Director, Nunamta Aulukestai will discuss this project and its potential to re-shape the land, wildlife and people in its path. The Future of the Arctic (Mountain View, CA) EcoSalonWednesday, March 30, 2011 (5:30 PM - 8:00 PM Pacific)Climate change is happening faster and more dramatically in the Arctic than anywhere else on Earth. The retreat of the Arctic ice pack is exposing the Arctic Ocean to unprecedented levels of sunlight and warming, which will trigger environmental changes such as undersea plant growth, northward migration of fish, and, of course, possible extinction of emblematic Arctic fauna, such as polar bears and walrus. Climate scientists and the U.S. Navy predict that the Arctic will be ice-free for at least a month per year by 2035, and the environmental pressures on the region will be aggravated by additional human activity. Increasingly accessible natural resources, such as oil, gas, minerals, and fish present enormous economic opportunities that have caught the attention of countries with jurisdiction in nearby waters and credible claims in not-so-nearby waters. A resource scramble in the Arctic presents a host of geopolitical, security, and environmental threats to the countries bordering the Arctic ocean, other “interested” countries and, most especially, to indigenous populations. This E2 EcoSalon will offer an in-depth discussion of the opportunities and challenges raised by the rapidly changing Arctic from three expert panelists, and a stunning visual introduction of the melting poles by National Geographic Award-winning photographer Camille Seaman, who will open the program with the acclaimed presentation that she gave at the 2011 TED conference. Lisa Speer, Director of NRDC's International Oceans Program, will then set the stage with a description of the changing Arctic environment, the natural resources becoming accessible and the environmental dangers posed by their exploitation. Jared Carney, Executive Director of Program Development for the Milken Institute, will chart the potential development of commerce and infrastructure in and around the Arctic Ocean, especially in Russia. Dr. Phil McGillivary, the US Coast Guard PACAREA Science Liaison, will describe mechanisms for negotiating orderly exploitation of the Arctic, resolving issues of sovereignty, and protecting the rights of native populations. Curbing China's Skyrocketing Energy Use and Carbon Emissions - Collaboration in Building Efficiency vs. Headlong Development (Palo Alto, CA) EcoSalonTuesday, November 16, 2010 (5:30 PM - 8:00 PM Pacific)It’s no secret that China’s rapid industrialization and skyrocketing growth has caused its energy demand to more than double in the last decade, and it may double again by 2030. China has overtaken the US as the world’s largest user of energy and emitter of greenhouse gases. The Chinese government is seeking ways to steer its development in a more sustainable manner, not to mention lead the global clean energy economy. At this E2 EcoSalon, Barbara Finamore, Director of NRDC’s China Program, and Nan Zhou of the China Energy Group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, will share insights on China’s low-carbon development strategies and policies, with a focus on the building sector, which accounts for a quarter of its total energy consumption – more than steel, iron, cement and aluminum production combined. China’s rapid economic expansion also means rapid scale-up of its electricity infrastructure – wind, solar, nuclear but mostly coal power plants are being built, together with new high-voltage transmission lines to carry power to load centers. Terry Fry, Senior VP at Nexant and Board Member of the China-US Energy Efficiency Alliance, has lived in China and worked in the renewable energy and energy efficiency sectors. He will discuss the rapid development of China’s energy industry and what it means for U.S. companies and American competitiveness. (San Francisco, CA) SpecialEventMonday, November 1, 2010 (6:00 PM - 8:00 PM Pacific)E2 Co-founder Bob Epstein and E2 member E2 Nancy Floyd (Nth Power) will argue against Prop 23 in this debate with Prop 23 supporters. "Do California's laws on greenhouse gas emissions stimulate or stifle the economy? When Governor Schwarzenegger signed California's landmark climate law, AB 32, four years ago the state's unemployment was around 5 percent. now it is around 12 percent. cause or coincidence? Proposition 23 would suspend AB 32 until the state achieves four consecutive quarters of unemployment below 5.5 percent. Jack Stewart (California Manufacturers and Technology Association) and Tom Tanton (T2 & Associates) say that will create jobs and help consumers. Nancy floyd (Nth Power) and Bob Epstein (Environmental Entrepreneurs) say that will hurt clean tech investment and job creation. Who's right? Join the spirited conversation led by Climate One's Greg Dalton the night before California voters decide whether the state stays the course or charts a new direction." The Deepwater Horizon Oil Disaster: An NRDC Briefing (San Francisco, CA) SpecialEventTuesday, August 3, 2010 (6:00 PM - 8:00 PM Pacific)E2 members are invited to attend an NRDC expert briefing on the BP Gulf Coast oil tragedy, including first hand accounts. Felicia Marcus (Western Director), Jessica Lass (Senior Press Secretary), Gina Solomon (Senior Scientist, Public Health Program), and David Pettit (Director, Southern California Air Program) will describe the factors that contributed to the disaster, the cost it has already exacted, how we can hold BP accountable, and the policy solutions we need to put in place to prevent another tragedy of this kind. Please email or call (415-875-6100) NRDC's Tammy Tran to rsvp or if you have any questions. Background Government officials approximate that over 100 million gallons of crude oil have gushed into the Gulf of Mexico since the Deepwater Horizon caught fire on April 20th. Some scientists believe the actual damage could be nearly double that figure, far exceeding the Exxon Valdez disaster that poured almost 11 million gallons of crude into Prince Williams Sound two decades ago. In under three months, the Deepwater Horizon blowout has escalated to the worst environmental disaster in American history. NRDC is on the ground in Louisiana, helping to protect one of the most ecologically complex regions of the country, its people, and its economy from the devastating consequences of offshore drilling. To bolster our efforts, NRDC recently opened the Gulf Resource Center where we are working in concert with local organizations and individuals, acquiring community input and knowledge while providing open-door access to our science, health, policy, advocacy, and communications expertise. Food and Climate: Reducing the Carbon Footprint of our Diet (Berkeley, CA) EcoSalonThursday, November 12, 2009 (5:30 PM - 8:00 PM Pacific)Changing the way we think about and eat food will have a profound effect on reducing the amount of carbon dioxide on our planet. The overall greenhouse gas emissions embedded in the world's food supply chain are a leading cause of global warming - totaling more emissions than the transportation sector when accounting for related deforestation. This inextricable link is gaining recognition and should help guide our actions, as we seek to feed a growing world population and combat the effects of climate change. The daily choices made by consumers, coupled with innovation to the global food industry, can make significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. With room for major improvements to the way we produce, distribute, and choose our own food here in the U.S., new research indicates that consumers can improve their health, diet, and the safety of their food while helping to cut carbon emissions associated with climate change. Christopher Jones from the UC Berkeley Institute of the Environment will share the latest research on food choices and their associated carbon footprints, plus useful new tools for consumers. Jonathan Kaplan, Director of NRDC's Sustainable Agriculture Project, will talk about progress throughout the food chain and the role of business in shaping a better food system. Also hear about NRDC's 2010 Growing Green Awards and the recent call for nominations. Invitations have been emailed.
