WHAT CLEAN ENERGY JOBS? THESE CLEAN ENERGY JOBS!

Please find below Volume 14 of E2’s weekly wrap-up of job announcements and project developments in the clean economy.  Compiled from news sources around the country, this week’s clean energy jobs report highlights a number of wind and energy efficiency projects throughout the nation.

Two new energy efficiency projects in Kentucky are set to create thousands of jobs in the state. In the city of Monticello, KY, the University of Kentucky inaugurated its Houseboat to Energy Efficient Residences (HBEER) initiative, focused on retooling and redirecting Kentucky's houseboat manufacturing industry to produce manufactured housing units that are highly energy-efficient and cost under $100,000.

General Electric announced that it will be investing $800 million in its Appliance Park complex in Louisville, KY to launch production of its GeoSpring energy-efficient water heater--its first new product line onsite since 1957. The GeoSpring model can save homeowners up to $325 annually and uses less than half the energy of traditional water heaters.  The company plans to hire up to 1,000 workers by 2014. $24.8 million in federal tax credits under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act have helped to make the new production line and the jobs that come with it possible.

Wind projects also reported growing job numbers this week. BP announced plans to build a 200 MW wind project in upstate NY that will generate $1.7 million per year for the local school districts and create 250-300 construction jobs. In Illinois, Invenergy Wind LLC, is currently building the Bishop Hill Wind Farm, creating a total of 200 construction jobs and 15 full-time jobs.

Spotlight on Advanced Lighting Technologies

Advanced Lighting Technologies, headquartered outside of Cleveland in Solon, Ohio, is a technology innovator and manufacturer of energy-efficient lighting, with US operations in Ohio, California and Illinois. Through its subsidiary Venture Lighting, ADLT has developed a halogen bulb that is twice as efficient as, yet looks nearly identical to, a conventional incandescent bulb. The company is achieving higher efficiencies than many of its competitors, while keeping production costs low so the bulbs can be affordable.

The technological breakthrough for ADLT’s super-efficient halogen bulb is in the interior capsule. Coated with 63 layers of nanofilm, the capsule recycles heat that would otherwise be wasted, back into the filament, converting it into light energy. Developed in Ohio, the capsule is expanding efficient lighting options for customers who want the instant-on and familiar glow of an incandescent, without all that energy waste.

The company employs 120 workers in Northeast Ohio, and 300 nationwide. For more information on ADLT, please visit www.adlt.com.
