The Honorable Lisa Jackson U.S Environmental Protection Agency 1200 Pennsylvania Ave NW Washington, DC 20460
Attn: Docket ID No. EPA-HQ-OAR-2011-0660
Dear Administrator Jackson,
As members of Environmental Entrepreneurs (E2), we are writing to express our appreciation and strong support for the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposal to establish a Carbon Pollution Standard for New Power Plants. As business leaders, we recognize that carbon pollution is a daunting threat to our economy, but that the solutions to this threat present a historic opportunity for economic growth. This standard is an essential step towards spurring innovation and investment in low-carbon, high-efficiency technologies and we are proud to support this proposal.
E2 is a non-partisan, national community of business leaders who promote strong environmental policy to grow the economy. We are entrepreneurs, investors, and professionals from every sector of the economy who collectively have been involved in financing, creating or working in the early development of more than 1,100 companies, which have created over 500,000 jobs. Our members manage over $90 billion in private equity capital that will flow over the next several years into new companies.
Over the last decade economic trends have shown that the U.S. must transition to a clean energy economy to remain competitive in the global marketplace. The expanding clean energy sector represents our greatest opportunity to restore a robust economy and create millions of new jobs. Just last week the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that the U.S. now has over 3 million green jobs or 2.4% of total employment. Meanwhile, the environmental technology sector, which includes renewable energy, alone accounts for more than $300 billion in revenues, and 1.7 million jobs.
Unfortunately, there are still billions of investment dollars waiting on the sidelines instead of being invested in clean energy innovation because of uncertainty in federal energy policy. Investors and entrepreneurs seeking to commercialize the innovations that will secure America’s position in the global economy now have a clear signal that will drive investments toward domestic clean energy industries, putting currently sidelined dollars to work and creating new American jobs in the process.
While this rule applies only to new power plants, the Clean Air Act requires EPA to set limits for existing power plants and we support EPA moving forward to address this responsibility. Our experience has shown that investments in cleaner technologies and greater efficiency are a pathway toward prosperity and economic growth and will help us avoid the negative impacts to our economy from climate change.
Once again we strongly support the proposed Carbon Pollution Standard and thank you for its proposal.
Sincerely,
|
