WHAT CLEAN ENERGY JOBS? THESE CLEAN ENERGY JOBS!

Please find below Volume 21 of E2’s weekly wrap-up of job announcements and project developments in the clean economy.  Compiled from news sources around the country, this week’s clean energy jobs report highlights a number of electric vehicle, wind, and public transportation projects throughout the nation.

Several new electric vehicle projects were announced in the Midwest region. In an effort to promote sustainability, the city of Chicago is installing 280 EV charging stations in dense residential and high-traffic areas. The $8.8 million project represents one of the largest concentrations of fast-charging stations in the world, and the overall infrastructure has created approximately 18 jobs so far. Magna E-Car Systems unveiled a new $40-45 million facility in Grand Blanc Township, MI that will produce high-power, high-voltage components for hybrid and electric vehicles. It currently employs 95 workers, but has plans to expand to 525 by 2017.

CSX announced plans to add 140 jobs in Baltimore, MD and Cumberland, MD region, responsible for operating trains and maintaining tracks, locomotives and rail cars.  In the state of Alabama, 90 new CSX workers will be in charge of enhancing the company’s capabilities, attending to the rising demand for rail-based freight services.

Spotlight on Jaco Environmental

Jaco Environmental, headquartered near Seattle, Washington, is an appliance recycler that helps households cut energy costs and utilities meet efficiency goals by removing inefficient refrigerators from the grid and demanufacturing them into raw materials—95% of which is recycled to make new products. Partnering with utilities to help phase out energy-wasting appliances, Jaco has recycling facilities in 34 states and employs more than 520 people, with significant growth planned in the coming years.

In Stow, Ohio, Jaco’s facility disassembles between 100 and 150 refrigerators a day, says facility manager Tom Steinheiser. Employing cutting-edge shredding technology, Jaco is able to reduce the refrigerators down to material parts in a matter of hours, ending up with iron, copper, aluminum, plastic -- all valuable commodities -- in addition to foam, CFC’s--a potent ozone-depleting greenhouse gas--, oil, and refrigerant at the end of the process. And beyond processing whole refrigerators, Jaco’s Stow location has a shredder that is capable of recycling an additional 150-200 refrigerators that have gone through the first stage of dismantling at one of their other U.S. facilities.

NOTE: Each of these job numbers were culled from publicly available announcements of new clean energy ventures. "Status" is used to informally categorize the stage of development of a project, with "in operation" meaning a energy project that has gone live, or a manufacturing facility that is on line. "In Progress" is used for any project in construction or any program just starting, and "Announced" captures those projects in earlier stages of development. Inclusion in this newsletter is not an indication of E2 support for any individual project.
