This edition highlights a number of solar, wind, biofuel, smart grid, and biogas, projects throughout the nation. Clean Energy Developments Located in Turtle Lake, MN, GreenWhey Energy recently announced plans to build a $28.5 million anaerobic digester facility. The new 3.2MW plant will use 500,000 gallons of wastewater from local food companies everyday to produce enough energy to power over 3,000 homes. The company announced that the development will be built by 50-70 construction works, and will generate 13 full-time positions. Siemens Energy announced plans to invest $7 million in a new wind turbine training center. The company's new 40,000 sq. ft. facility received $650,000 in economic incentives from the City of Orlando, Orange County and the state of Florida. The new operation is set to create 50 new permanent positions, and expects 2,400 wind-turbine workers from the US, Puerto Rico, Canada, and Brazil to visit the training facility. In Kinney County, TX, E.ON Climate & Renewables just completed a new 100MW wind project. The Anacacho Wind Farm is composed of 55 1.8MW wind turbines, and was built by 200 construction workers. The newly dedicated project is expected to generate $17 million in local taxes, $8 million in local salaries, and more than $34 million to landowners. Strata Solar announced plans to build what is expected to be the biggest solar project in North Carolina. Located in Duplin County, the $250 million project is expected to create approximately 400 construction jobs. The electricity generated by the 100MW installation, will be sold to the Progress Energy Carolinas, a subsidiary of Duke Energy. Company Spotlight: Mendota Bioenergy LLC Mendota Bioenergy is an advanced biofuels company based in Fresno, near Mendota, CA. A group of sugar beet farmers formed the company after the Spreckels Sugar factory—a significant economic base—closed in September 2008 following 45 years of operation, putting 200 people out of work. Developing a new market for the beets, the company plans to build a commercial-scale 40 million gallons per year (MGY) integrated biorefinery, which will inject new jobs and economic activity into an industry hard hit by the loss of the sugar plant. Mendota Bioenergy was just awarded a grant by the California Energy Commission to construct a 1/40th scale 1 MGY pilot/demonstration plant in Five Points Fresno County, which will employ advanced enzyme and microbial techniques to convert energy beets into nearly 300,000 gallons of fuel in a year. The refinery will have the lowest carbon index, 20, of any U.S. biorefinery, and, recycling water from energy beets, will draw almost no freshwater. The demonstration project is projected to add up to 50 construction and 5 part-time operations jobs, and the commercial facility could create as many as 300 direct and indirect construction jobs, in addition to jobs in the biorefinery, trucking, harvesting, or growing the beets. | | Clean Energy News In 2012, Solar Grew 138.9%; Wind Up 16.6%, Geothermal Up 9.6%, Biomass Up 1.6% While Nuclear, Coal, and Oil All Decline via U.S. Energy Information Administration, February 25, 2013 The EIA's latest "Electric Power Monthly," incorporating data through December 2012, shows that non-hydro renewable energy sources grew by 12.8% last year, generating 5.4% of the U.S.'s electricity. Solar increased by 138.9%, while wind increased by 16.6%, geothermal grew by 9.6%, and biomass by 1.6%. Since 2007, non-hydro renewables have more than doubled their contribution to the nation's electrical supply, while coal, which a decade ago powered half of the nation's electrical grid, dropped to provide only 37.4% of generation. Including hydropower, renewable sources combined generated 12.22% of the U.S.'s electricity in 2012. First Solar Sets World Record for CdTe Solar Cell Efficiency via GIE Media, February 28, 2013 First Solar Inc., in an announcement confirmed by the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory, said that it achieved the highest solar cell conversion efficiency ever recorded for cadmium-telluride (CdTe) PV solar cells: 18.7%. The solar cell was developed at the company's factory in Perrysburg, Ohio, using commercial-scale processes and materials. First Solar's average manufacturing line produced cells with 12.9% efficiency in the fourth quarter of 2012, up from 12.2% in Q4 2011, and the newly achieved increased efficiencies represent a payoff from the company's large investment in research and development. Since beginning commercial production in 2002, First Solar has manufactured enough solar modules to power approximately 3.5 million homes annually.
