(New York, NY) Focus MeetingTuesday, March 12, 2013 (6:00 PM - 7:30 PM Eastern)"Environment" used to be an issue that Republicans and Democrats agreed on. Today, more than ever, we need bipartisan support to promote clean energy and curb carbon emissions. What will it take for our representatives in Congress to come together on environmental issues? Former New York Governor George Pataki, widely respected for his bipartisan work on the environment, will join us for a discussion on how we can bring both sides of the aisle together around environmental and energy issues. During his three-terms as New York's chief executive, Governor Pataki advanced cutting-edge policies in the renewable energy and environmental fields. His initiatives included the protection of over one million acres of open space, the adoption of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), the implementation of the nation's first green building tax credit, landmark brownfield legislation and programs to enhance the production and use of alternative energy. Achieving Clean Waterways Through Design: A Case Study of Innovation and Infrastructure (New York) Focus MeetingMonday, January 7, 2013 (6:30 PM - 8:00 PM Eastern)*Due to Hurricane Sandy, this event will be rescheduled for January 7, 2013. Invitations will go out in December. For New York and several other large cities, excess stormwater turns out to indirectly be one of the biggest sources of water pollution. Cities are now embracing new, innovative approaches to stormwater management such as porous pavement, street plantings and green roofs that absorb rain water where it falls. The city has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) to create green infrastructure master plans within watershed areas most affected by stormwater runoff: Gowanus Canal, Flushing Bay, and Newtown Creek. Join E2 to learn more about an innovative project, recently featured in TED's City 2.0 Initiative series, that proposes a series of in-street channels and pollutant-removing gardens to cost-effectively diverts all storm water from the sewer system, thereby eliminating sewer overflows while providing several ancillary benefits. You will also hear from NYCDEP on their initiatives to reduce water pollution from stormwater runoff. Many thanks to Bloomberg LP for generously hosting this event. (New York City) EcoSalonTuesday, November 27, 2012 (6:00 PM - 8:00 PM Eastern)Indian Point is a nuclear power plant just 35 miles north of midtown Manhattan. Hearings are now underway on whether to extend the aging reactors’ operating licenses, set to expire in 2013 and 2015. The debate is lively: Proponents for a permanent shut down of the plant cite its vulnerability to terrorism, earthquakes and other natural disasters like Hurricane Sandy. Meanwhile, others raise concern about the adequacy of alternative sources of power. What are the energy alternatives to Indian Point? Does it make sense to close a facility with zero GHG emissions? What policies are in place or will be needed to promote the investment required to replace nuclear power? Technology to Dollars: Converting Building Efficiency to Competitive Advantage (NYC) EcoSalonWednesday, October 12, 2011 (6:00 PM - 8:00 PM Eastern)Join E2 at 330 Madison with Suki Paciorek of Vornado Realty Trust, Peter Malik of NRDC’s Center for Market Innovation and Susan Leeds of NYC Energy Efficiency Corp to learn about three initiatives to spur investment in building efficiency and, in the process, provide positive economic returns. Building efficiency represents an untapped source of value in the New York commercial real estate market. As one of the country’s largest owners and managers of commercial real estate, Vornado sees that value, and is undertaking energy efficiency upgrades and implementing a transparent energy information management system throughout its portfolio to gain a competitive leasing advantage. NRDC’s Center for Market Innovation has teamed up with Vornado and other industry leaders to measure and showcase the economic results that can be realized by building owners and occupants through the integration of high performance tenant spaces with efficient building central systems and advanced energy management practices. 330 Madison is a leading example of this approach. To accelerate the scale-up of energy efficiency retrofits, New York City recently established NYCEEC as an independent non-profit, mission-driven but market focused financial intermediary. NYCEEC is tasked with providing innovative financing mechanisms and developing strategies to generate demand for retrofitting. Its mandate is to achieve financial self-sufficiency, by expanding its balance sheet of income generating financing investments. Invitations have been sent.
