While implementation of the National Ocean Policy is just beginning, best practices of improved ocean management are already being applied around the U.S., resulting in mutual benefits for the marine environment and coastal communities. Please join a special NRDC webinar to learn about National Ocean Policy, and why we need more efficient and effective management of our coasts and oceans. Experts will also share compelling examples of West Coast initiatives to engage stakeholders – from fishermen to conservationists -- in ocean management, and to apply sound science to decision-making. The Future of the Arctic (Santa Monica, CA) EcoSalonTuesday, March 29, 2011 (6:00 PM - 8:00 PM Pacific)Climate change is happening faster and more dramatically in the Arctic than anywhere else on Earth. The retreat of the Arctic ice pack is exposing the Arctic Ocean to unprecedented levels of sunlight and warming, which will trigger environmental changes such as undersea plant growth, northward migration of fish, and, of course, possible extinction of emblematic Arctic fauna, such as polar bears and walrus. Climate scientists and the U.S. Navy predict that the Arctic will be ice-free for at least a month per year by 2035, and the environmental pressures on the region will be aggravated by additional human activity. Increasingly accessible natural resources, such as oil, gas, minerals, and fish present enormous economic opportunities that have caught the attention of countries with jurisdiction in nearby waters and credible claims in not-so-nearby waters. A resource scramble in the Arctic presents a host of geopolitical, security, and environmental threats to the countries bordering the Arctic ocean, other "interested" countries and, most especially, to indigenous populations. This E2 EcoSalon will offer an in-depth discussion of the opportunities and challenges raised by the rapidly changing Arctic featuring Lisa Speer, Director of NRDC's International Oceans Program. Lunchtime Conversation with Peter Malik (Santa Monica, CA) Focus MeetingFriday, February 11, 2011 (12:00 PM - 2:00 PM Pacific)Peter Malik, Director of NRDC's Center for Market Innovation (CMI) will host a lunchtime focus meeting for E2 members to discuss why the climate crisis can't be solved by legislation alone. Recognizing that private investment and new asset classes are needed to bring solutions to scale, CMI, under Peter's direction, is pursuing a set of strategies that focuses on harnessing the power of markets to deliver profitable environmental solutions. CMI is working to advance market mechanisms that channel capital towards investments that are both good for the environment and commercially rewarding. CMI's priority initiatives include: providing lenders with reliable data that demonstrate actual savings results of retrofit projects which allows them to effectively assess the risk profile of retrofit investments; establishing a public-private partnership that will define and execute new financing solutions; and providing economic analysis that supports implementation of market transformative clean air rules that will drive investment in cleaner solutions. Email invitations will be sent to E2 members as the date approaches. Please contact Courtney Gross (cgross@nrdc.org) with any questions. (San Francisco, CA) SpecialEventMonday, November 1, 2010 (6:00 PM - 8:00 PM Pacific)E2 Co-founder Bob Epstein and E2 member E2 Nancy Floyd (Nth Power) will argue against Prop 23 in this debate with Prop 23 supporters. "Do California's laws on greenhouse gas emissions stimulate or stifle the economy? When Governor Schwarzenegger signed California's landmark climate law, AB 32, four years ago the state's unemployment was around 5 percent. now it is around 12 percent. cause or coincidence? Proposition 23 would suspend AB 32 until the state achieves four consecutive quarters of unemployment below 5.5 percent. Jack Stewart (California Manufacturers and Technology Association) and Tom Tanton (T2 & Associates) say that will create jobs and help consumers. Nancy floyd (Nth Power) and Bob Epstein (Environmental Entrepreneurs) say that will hurt clean tech investment and job creation. Who's right? Join the spirited conversation led by Climate One's Greg Dalton the night before California voters decide whether the state stays the course or charts a new direction." This event is presented by the Commonwealth Club and will be at their SF Club Office at 595 Market Street, San Francicso, CA 94105. TICKETS REQUIRED. For more details and to purchase tickets, click here . California in the Climate Debate - Implications for National Policy (Santa Monica, CA) EcoSalonWednesday, October 13, 2010 (6:00 PM - 8:00 PM Pacific)California's innovative, forward thinking clean energy and climate bill, AB 32, is in danger of being overturned this November, which would strike a serious blow to the economy and environment. Largely funded by out-of-state oil interests, including Valero, Tesoro, Koch Industries and other oil companies, Proposition 23 is a deceptive state ballot measure which would increase pollution, kill jobs, and carries national and international consequences. E2 members are invited to join us for a special Ecosalon on Wednesday, October 13 where Annie Notthoff, NRDC California Advocacy Director, and Bob Deans, NRDC Federal Communications Director, will discuss the very real implications of this "Dirty Energy Proposition".
