The National Ocean Policy was a landmark victory for ocean life, and for all of us who love, use, and make a living off the ocean. While implementation of the National Ocean Policy is just beginning, best practices of improved ocean management are already being applied around the U.S., resulting in mutual benefits for the marine environment and coastal communities. Please join a special NRDC webinar to learn about National Ocean Policy, and why we need more efficient and effective management of our coasts and oceans. Experts will also share compelling examples of West Coast initiatives to engage stakeholders – from fishermen to conservationists -- in ocean management, and to apply sound science to decision-making. Invitations have been sent. Please contact Erik Chen for more information. Salmon Wars and Sustainable Development (Seattle, WA) Focus MeetingThursday, September 6, 2012 (11:45 AM - 1:30 PM Pacific)Please join us for lunch with Joel Reynolds, Western Director of NRDC. As an environmental lawyer for 32 years and a senior attorney with NRDC for over 20 years, Joel Reynolds is a veteran of many campaigns in which large scale development has threatened sensitive ecosystems. He’s worked with developers to turn bad situations into good ones, and built coalitions with the private sector and public officials to promote sustainable development. But sometimes there are projects that can’t be fixed, that actually impede other responsible development. The proposed Pebble Mine project in Alaska, slated to become one of the largest gold, copper and molybdenum mines in the world, is one Joel describes as “an irrevocably bad project in the wrong location.” It threatens to destroy a half billion dollar Bristol Bay salmon fishery and puts at risk thousands of fishing and recreation jobs in Bristol Bay and the Pacific Northwest. Joel is engaged with a broad coalition against the project, including private landowners, Native corporations, leading jewelers, and conservative, as well as progressive, stakeholders. This is an opportunity both to learn more about the Pebble Mine controversy and to explore with Joel how advocacy can be used to encourage sound, sustainable development. For more information, please contact Erik Chen. Portland: Towards Zero Waste: How Close Can We Get? The Acid Test: Oceans Acidification and the Pacific Northwest (Portland, OR) EcoSalonMonday, September 12, 2011 (6:00 PM - 8:00 PM Pacific)Healthy, resilient oceans are essential to the world’s ecosystems and economies. The threats of overfishing, pollution and destructive resource extraction practices are obvious. However, perhaps the biggest threat to the oceans is invisible: the increasing acidification of ocean waters resulting from increased CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere. As ocean waters are becoming more acidic, shell producing species are declining, putting the entire marine food chain at risk. The consequences of ocean acidification are especially critical for the Pacific Northwest, where the fishing, tourism, and recreation industries greatly depend on a vibrant and productive ocean ecosystem. Join E2 for an evening EcoSalon on the threat of oceans acidification, as well as efforts underway to advance sustainable practices and policies. Our speakers will include Congressman Brian Baird (D-WA), who during his tenure in the House was the Chair of the House Subcommittee on Energy and Environment and a leading voice in Washington for addressing ocean acidification, NRDC Oceans Attorney Leila Monroe (see her blog), and Amy Grondin (see bio), a commercial fisherman from the fishing vessel the Duna, Sustainable Seafood Consultant and Commercial Fishing Outreach Specialist. This event will also feature a screening of the NRDC short film "Acid Test: The Global Challenge of Ocean Acidification", narrated and promoted by actress Sigourney Weaver. Contact Kevin Levy (klevy@nrdc.org), E2 Program Assistant, with any questions. Energy Efficiency Policies to Spur Oregon Job Creation Now (Northwest) TeleSalonFriday, February 25, 2011 (1:00 PM - 1:40 PM Pacific)Oregon’s unemployment rate hangs at over 10% and the state faces a $3.5 billion budget deficit. Meanwhile, buildings are responsible for about one-third of Oregon’s greenhouse gas emissions and are one of the fastest growing sources of emissions in the state. What policies can be used to spur economic activity, put people back to work, and help build the clean energy economy? According to national data, energy efficiency projects are not only one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but also a cost-effective way to create jobs. For every $1 million invested in energy efficiency, up to 17 direct and indirect jobs can be created. That’s more than new road construction and up to 3 times the number of jobs created per $1 million invested by traditional energy sectors, such as oil and gas development. Governor Kitzhaber has already identified energy upgrades in schools as a top economic priority—but there are many other energy efficiency opportunities available throughout Oregon’s economy, in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors. Jana Gastellum, representing a coalition of groups advancing energy efficiency policies in the 2011 legislative session, will discuss the economic benefits of energy efficiency. She will be joined by Andrea Salinas, OEC’s Legislative Director and Ralph Cavanagh, Co-director of the Energy Program at the Natural Resources Defense Council, to present these issues and how E2 will be able to help advance energy efficiency policies this year. Invitations have been emailed to E2 members and friends. Contact Tommy Hayes (thayes@nrdc.org) with any questions. National Climate Change Legislation: Getting to 60 Votes EcoSalonFriday, April 9, 2010 (6:00 PM - 8:00 PM Pacific)Please join us for the inaugural event of the Pacific Northwest Chapter of Environmental Entrepreneurs (E2), focused on achieving a comprehensive climate and clean energy bill in Congress. The science is established that emissions of heat trapping gasses from industrial and transportation sources are causing an accelerating array of weather changes, threatening catastrophic disruptions of ecosystems around the globe. However this threat also represents an enormous opportunity. The United States is at a critical crossroads in the process to pass legislation that can spur the world's leading clean energy economy, create a new generation of American jobs, and avoid the worst consequences of climate change. But will the U.S. Congress have the political will to enact a global warming and clean energy bill? Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA), a leader in the Senate on climate legislation, will address her role in this debate, and her view of the path forward to 60 votes for a comprehensive climate and clean energy bill. David Doniger, Policy Director for NRDC's Climate Center, will discuss the state of play in Congress on this issue and the impact U.S. action will have on the international climate accord process. Invitations have been emailed. Contact Mark Liffmann or Chris Dennett at E2Northwest@gmail.com with any questions. |
