The Deepwater Horizon Oil Disaster: An NRDC Briefing (San Francisco, CA) SpecialEvent

Tuesday, August 3, 2010 (6:00 PM - 8:00 PM Pacific)
E2 members are invited to attend an NRDC expert briefing on the BP Gulf Coast oil tragedy, including first hand accounts. Felicia Marcus (Western Director), Jessica Lass (Senior Press Secretary), Gina Solomon (Senior Scientist, Public Health Program), and David Pettit (Director, Southern California Air Program) will describe the factors that contributed to the disaster, the cost it has already exacted, how we can hold BP accountable, and the policy solutions we need to put in place to prevent another tragedy of this kind.

Please email or call (415-875-6100) NRDC's Tammy Tran to rsvp or if you have any questions.

Background

Government officials approximate that over 100 million gallons of crude oil have gushed into the Gulf of Mexico since the Deepwater Horizon caught fire on April 20th. Some scientists believe the actual damage could be nearly double that figure, far exceeding the Exxon Valdez disaster that poured almost 11 million gallons of crude into Prince Williams Sound two decades ago.

In under three months, the Deepwater Horizon blowout has escalated to the worst environmental disaster in American history. NRDC is on the ground in Louisiana, helping to protect one of the most ecologically complex regions of the country, its people, and its economy from the devastating consequences of offshore drilling. To bolster our efforts, NRDC recently opened the Gulf Resource Center where we are working in concert with local organizations and individuals, acquiring community input and knowledge while providing open-door access to our science, health, policy, advocacy, and communications expertise.

Energy Efficiency to Resuscitate our Economy and Environment (San Francisco, CA) Focus Meeting

Friday, July 16, 2010 (12:30 PM - 1:30 PM Pacific)
Despite the wide debate about the economic conditions that led to the recent recession, the role of bad energy policy has not received the attention it warrants - especially when it comes to the topic of energy efficiency. We can go a lot further with efficiency than the vast majority of people are aware. Smart regulations and aggressive policy have the potential to create markets and spur leaps in technological advances for this invisible resource. David B. Goldstein, Energy Program Co-Director at NRDC, and MacArthur "genius award" Fellow, will give a presentation to E2 members and debut his new book, Invisible Energy: Strategies to Rescue the Economy and Save the Planet.

Invitations have been emailed to E2 members. Please contact Tommy Hayes at thayes@nrdc.org with any questions.

Thursday, June 10, 2010 (5:30 PM - 8:00 PM Pacific)
With a banner year for rainfall in California, the water debate continues to occupy center stage with water conservationists, farmers, fisherman and cities engaged in a spirited discussion over California’s dwindling water resources. At stake is the balance among healthy fisheries, sustainable agriculture, and the needs of urban residents and businesses. This EcoSalon will bring together key water constituents – a farmer (Daniel M. Dooley, Farmer, Attorney and Vice-President of the University of California, Agricultural and Natural Resources Programs), a fisherman (Zeke Grader, Executive Director of the Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen’s Associations), and a water efficiency expert (Ed Osann, Senior Policy Analyst, NRDC Water Program) – to discuss the tension between California’s varied water interests, how the debate is changing and options to better manage and share our limited water supplies. In addition, we will hear reports about the water reform package passed last year and an assembly bill (AB 2063) from The Honorable Jared Huffman (D-Marin) to help restore California’s Chinook salmon and salmon fishing industry.

Food and Climate: Reducing the Carbon Footprint of our Diet (Berkeley, CA) EcoSalon

Thursday, November 12, 2009 (5:30 PM - 8:00 PM Pacific)
Changing the way we think about and eat food will have a profound effect on reducing the amount of carbon dioxide on our planet. The overall greenhouse gas emissions embedded in the world's food supply chain are a leading cause of global warming - totaling more emissions than the transportation sector when accounting for related deforestation. This inextricable link is gaining recognition and should help guide our actions, as we seek to feed a growing world population and combat the effects of climate change. The daily choices made by consumers, coupled with innovation to the global food industry, can make significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

With room for major improvements to the way we produce, distribute, and choose our own food here in the U.S., new research indicates that consumers can improve their health, diet, and the safety of their food while helping to cut carbon emissions associated with climate change. Christopher Jones from the UC Berkeley Institute of the Environment will share the latest research on food choices and their associated carbon footprints, plus useful new tools for consumers. Jonathan Kaplan, Director of NRDC's Sustainable Agriculture Project, will talk about progress throughout the food chain and the role of business in shaping a better food system. Also hear about NRDC's 2010 Growing Green Awards and the recent call for nominations.

Invitations have been emailed. For more information, please contact Tommy Hayes at thayes@nrdc.org or (415) 875-6100.

To this end, staff has been working with renewable generators to help build environmental concerns into California's plans for a clean energy economy and all of the pieces involved. Helen O'Shea from NRDC's Land Program will discuss highlights of this work including NRDC's involvement in California's Renewable Energy Transmission Initiative and NRDC's Path to Green Energy mapping tool.

Note: This event will be repeated in San Francisco at 5:00 PM. Invitations have been emailed to E2 members. Please contact Tommy Hayes at thayes@nrdc.org or (415) 875-6100 with any questions.
